Sade’s ‘Soldier Of Love’ Debuts At No. 1 With More Than 500,000 Sold

As expected, Sade’s Soldier of Love debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart with 501,655 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That beat previous estimates that the CD could sell between 375,000 and 400,000 copies. The CD is also No. 1 in 10 additional countries, including Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy, Dubai, Poland, Greece, Japan, Portugal and Spain.

According to Billboard, Solder of Love gives Sade her first No. 1 debut and her best sales week since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Soldier of Love is Sade’s second No. 1 album. The first, Promise, spent two weeks at the top of the chart in 1986.

The new album is also Sade’s first CD since Lovers Rock was released in November of 2000. It debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 370,000 sold in its first week. Since its release, Lovers Rock has sold 3.9 million in the U.S.

According to Billboard, Sade has notched eight top 10 albums in a row on the Billboard 200 – every one released since Diamond Life in 1985. That total includes six studio CDs, one greatest hits and one live recording.
The first single from Solider of Love, the title track, is No. 1 on the Smooth Jazz Top 20.

Sade will perform Saturday (February 20) on The Wanda Sykes Show.
